With the temperature now in the 90’s in the Boston area with high humidity it was time for a little cooling memory from my trip to Iceland this past May. Our tour group first started at Jökulsárlón a large glacial lake in southern part of Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland. Large icebergs fall from the glacier into the lake and then work themselves out to the ocean. We did a quick trip to Diamond Beach and its black sand with a nice contrast to the clear ice pieces lining the beach like hunks of diamonds. Our own boat tour was later down the road at Fjallsárlón Iceberg Boat Tours. The tour group was split into two groups and we were then properly dressed for the excursion in warmer clothing. My group was doing fine until the boat had engine problems just as we were about to reach the glacier. Another boat was brought up to us and we did a transfer of everyone without any incident. We then made our way to the glacier. Later that evening our tour director Omar hosted a cocktail hour at our hotel using some the 1000 year old ice chunks from our trip to Diamond Beach. I enjoyed my usual 7 up and the best looking well aged ice I have ever seen.
