In 1981 the Lowell Union of Portuguese Americans (LUPA), provided social services to the area’s Portuguese residents. Barbara Dunsford the director of the program, wrote several grants, including one that led to a photographic documentation project of which she asked me to provide photography. The Lowell Historic Preservation Commission provided this grant money. The project included documenting the Back Central Street neighborhood and its residents, as well as in the various factories and businesses where many Portuguese were employed. Now through the efforts of the UMASS Lowell Saab Foundation and Frank F. Sousa, Ph.D. Director of the Saab Center for Portuguese Studies along with Pavel Romaniko, M.F.A. Director, Digital Media, Associate Teaching Professor and Gray Fitzsimons, Ed.D. Research Associate an exhibition of 40 of these views will now be on display at the UMASS Lowell Meehan Student Center . A reception is scheduled for Monday November 9th at 530-7:30PM Moloney Ballroom room 260 at 220 Pawtucket Street Lowell, MA 01854. A closing reception and book presentation of these views will be forthcoming early February next year. Follow this link to my publisher Loom Press for Comunidade Urbana now available for pre-order.
