Mystery Murder and Mayhem at the Isle of Shoals

Last Thursday I attended the Rye NH Historical Society Smuttynose Island Murder Mystery Tour. This from the Rye Historical Society “Over 125 years ago, two women were murdered on an isolated island at the Isles of Shoals. One woman survived and the story she told scandalized the nation. Revisit the crime and decide for yourself whether the man convicted for the murders was really responsible for the tragic deaths on Smuttynose Island” . We started the tour at a the Rye Public Library with a historical information presentation by Ann Beattie. From there we headed to Rye Harbor and boarded the Shinning Star with Captain Jack to Smuttynose Island. We then transferred to some rubber boats like a team of Seals to the sandy cove amongst the rocks for a wet landing. Once on shore we got to meet the island stewards and viewed the homes and guest homes there. We had a beautiful, albeit windy day along with striking views on Star Island and several other locations on the Isle of Shoals. Ann Beattie gave us more stories and details regarding the murders with possible alternative consequences and tales of the lone survivor. Lots to see and take in with gray and harbor seals entertaining us on our arrival all ending with a side trip to Star Island. My Lowell contingent got a special treat once at the snack bar as we got to enjoy some Lime Rickey’s just like the ones from Dana’s Market. You can see all my views at my Events Page at this Link.
