Last Thursday I was on campus at St. Anselm College to document the visit of James McDonnell class of 81 and 59th Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department. The College honored him with the Joseph P. Collins Alumni Award of Merit, which he received in October 2025.
McDonnell reflected on how his education shaped his leadership, emphasizing the lasting value of the humanities, community, and everyday acts of respect and service. Across a keynote breakfast, panel discussion, and student lunch, he encouraged current students to embrace the “little things” that quietly shape character and purpose.
A panel discussion on the future of policing followed the breakfast, featuring Michael Burnett of Stratoscope Holdings and Lt. Matthew Barter of the Manchester Police Department, moderated by Professor Peter Cordella. The visit concluded with a student luncheon meetup and a special moment as they presented McDonnell with a signed Saint Anselm Men’s Rugby ball and jersey, celebrating his lasting connection to the Hilltop.
